Is Snapchat okay for kids?

Social media / messaging app · 2011, ongoing · Rated 12+ (Apple App Store); Teen (Google Play); minimum account age 13

Concerns to know about

Snapchat is a photo, video, and messaging app built around disappearing content, filters, and Stories shared with friends. Kids are drawn to its playful camera effects, streaks system, and the sense that messages vanish after viewing.

Snapchat is designed for users 13 and older, placing it well above the elementary-school age range of 5–10. Even for older kids, experts and Common Sense Media (which rates it 16+) flag serious risks around stranger contact, sexual content in the Discover feed, and disappearing messages that reduce accountability — all of which are strongly unsuitable for elementary-age children.

Violence & scary contentMild

No built-in violent content, but user-generated Snaps and the Discover feed can contain news clips or viral videos depicting real-world violence with no age-gating.

Profanity & crude languageModerate

User-generated chats and public Discover stories from outlets like Cosmopolitan and MTV frequently include crude language; there is no profanity filter.

Sexual content & innuendoStrong

The Discover feed surfaces content from publishers that has been self-labeled 'Not Safe for Work'; the disappearing-message feature is widely documented as a vector for sexting and unsolicited explicit images.

LGBTQ+ themesMild

LGBTQ+ topics appear incidentally in Discover articles and user content; no dedicated LGBTQ+ programming exists, but the app reflects the full spectrum of user-generated expression.

Faith & religious alignmentNone found

No notable content found; Snapchat has no faith-based editorial stance and religious content only appears incidentally via user posts.

Occult / supernatural themesNone found

No notable content found; occasional Halloween-themed AR filters exist but no substantive occult material is built into the platform.

Drugs, alcohol & smokingModerate

Litigation documents and parent reports indicate Snapchat's disappearing-message feature is used for arranging drug purchases; Discover content from entertainment publishers also references alcohol and drug culture.

Online chat & stranger contactStrong

Adults can contact minors through Snap's friend-suggestion algorithm; the app's Family Center parental tool requires the child's voluntary acceptance and can be turned off by the child at any time, and parents cannot view message content.

In-app purchases & adsModerate

Snapchat+ is a paid subscription tier; personalised advertising is displayed to all users, and user data is shared with third parties for ad-targeting purposes.

Social / political messagingMild

The Discover feed aggregates news and pop-culture content from major media outlets that routinely covers political and social topics; there is no editorial filter for age or viewpoint.
